An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department hit and killed a woman while responding to a call at a Halloween party in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday night, authorities confirmed.
According to the LAPD, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Woodman Avenue and Bessemer Street in Sherman Oaks. Officers were responding to allegations of a dispute among a big gathering of individuals when one collided with a pedestrian near the party, which police estimated had around 300 people.
The pedestrian, named only as a 32-year-old woman, was pronounced dead on the scene. Her name has yet to be revealed, but family members tell CBS Los Angeles that she leaves behind two young girls.
The accident occurred about a mile from the party on Woodman Avenue, between Bessemer and Erwin streets. It’s unclear whether she was on the roadway or in a crosswalk.
A witness recounted the crash to CBS Los Angeles. What I heard was a big thud; it piqued my interest since it wasn’t loud enough to be a gunshot, but it also didn’t sound like a car accident,” the witness stated. “I see one cop car in the middle of the street, sideways, and then I see a cop a couple feet from the kerb, looking into the street. … You could see the body in the middle of the street on the floor.”
The video from the location shows wet road conditions caused by a rainfall that passed through Southern California on Halloween.
