A legal advocacy group launched a nationwide campaign on Wednesday, calling on the incoming U.S. House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump on the first day lawmakers take office in January.
The organization, Free Speech For People, announced its “Time to Impeach” initiative following the midterm elections, seeking to pressure incoming House leadership to prioritize formal charges against the president immediately upon convening.
“Members of Congress swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution,” said Alexandra Flores-Quilty, campaign director at Free Speech For People. “When the new Congress convenes in January, those in control of the House have the power and responsibility to hold this lawless president accountable through impeachment.”
The campaign follows a September 15 House vote in which 147 lawmakers supported advancing articles of impeachment introduced by Representative Al Green, Democrat of Texas. Green’s resolution accused Trump of abusing executive authority by allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection to operate without adequate oversight, citing allegations of unlawful use of force, due process violations, and executive overreach.
Leadership at Free Speech For People argued that congressional inaction would undermine constitutional checks on the executive branch.
“The Framers designed the Impeachment Clause for moments like this, to address a corrupt and dangerous executive who tramples on the Constitution and the rule of law,” said John Bonifaz, president of the group. “If Congress fails to act, it will set a dangerous precedent that Trump, and any president hereafter, can operate above the law. The Constitution demands that we impeach and remove Trump from public office.”
According to the organization, more than 1.1 million individuals have signed a petition affiliated with its “Impeach Trump Again” campaign. The petition outlines allegations spanning 27 distinct grounds for removal. Organizers stated their intention to expand public outreach and lobbying efforts across congressional districts in the weeks preceding the January swearing-in ceremony.
