The search for a Dixon man who jumped into the Rock River earlier this month is over, according to police.
London Thomas, 22, was discovered dead in the Rock River near Sterling on April 24, Dixon Police Chief Ryan Bivins confirmed Thursday.
“We regret to inform you that London Thomas has been found dead. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Thomas and his family. ” We would like to thank everyone who assisted in locating Mr. Thomas,” Bivins said in a news statement.
The search for Thomas began on April 14, when police responded to various accusations of harassment at the Casey’s gas station at 1401 W. Fourth Street. Dixon police say they observed the suspects on the Peoria Avenue Bridge.
As police approached, officers say one of the suspects fled, while the other, Thomas, plunged from the bridge and into the river. Investigators said they were able to authenticate Thomas’ identification using squad vehicle dashcam footage and other security video.
The initial river search took 12 hours, from midnight to noon on April 14, and involved seven search and rescue boats, airborne and underwater drones, sonar equipment, and 70 individuals from eight different departments.
