A brawl broke out during a Columbus City Schools baseball game, leaving a man with a significant head injury.

According to a criminal complaint affidavit, on April 21, police received multiple complaints of a brawl in progress in a parking lot near the Eastmoor Academy High School baseball field. Officers arrived around 7:15 p.m. and spoke with an assistant principle from Mifflin Middle School, as well as other witnesses, who reported that all people involved in the incident had departed the site.

Police came to South 22nd Street about 30 minutes later after receiving a complaint of an assault. A man told investigators he had been assaulted at the high school and was taken to the hospital, where it was discovered he had an 8mm brain bleed from a strike to the head.

Police interviewed with witnesses who said the victim was at the school to watch his son’s game when he got into a verbal confrontation with another guy, Jamal Stafford.

Witnesses claimed that as the victim walked away from the altercation, Stafford punched him in the face, causing him to fall and lose consciousness.

Stafford, who is also facing additional counts of assault and domestic violence coming from an incident on March 3, was arrested Thursday and charged with felonious assault. On Friday, he was granted a $500,000 bond and ordered to appear in municipal court on May 8 for a preliminary hearing.

According to court records, Stafford previously served two months on an abduction charge in 2012 and nine years for aggravated murder in 2013.
