A Stark County man wanted in connection with a deadly April shooting in Canton has been apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Ashaad Carlisle, 33, was arrested without incident on Wednesday morning in the 700 block of Greenfield Avenue in Canton. Carlisle was wanted by Canton police in connection with the April shooting death of Richard Staats.

Carlisle is charged with aggravated murder and discharge of a firearm near banned premises, according to Canton Police Lt. Dennis Garren.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 4:23 a.m. on April 19 at a home in the 3100 block of Tuscarawas Street West. Aultman Security reported shots fired in the neighborhood, prompting officers to arrive. While officers were in route, dispatchers received another call about a shooting victim inside the home.

According to police, responding officers entered the flat and discovered Staats between a bed and a wall, suffering from a gunshot wound to the front of his head. Officers administered medical aid and requested EMS assistance. A witness inside the home informed authorities that she had called 911.

According to investigators, officers discovered a pellet gun and Staats’ cell phone inside the flat while processing the scene.

Staats was later removed from life support on April 21 and died of his injuries, according to Canton police.

After issuing an arrest warrant, the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force began looking for Carlisle in the Canton region. Carlisle was recently named the task force’s Fugitive of the Week.

“Detectives from the Canton Police Department and members of our task force worked quickly to identify and apprehend this suspect,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a statement. “The tips received from community members after the suspect was featured as Fugitive of the Week on Monday were invaluable to getting this fugitive off the streets.”
