A Westerville man was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison on Thursday for the 2024 shooting that killed another man who was waiting in line at a Gahanna Subway restaurant.
On December 20, 2024, cops responded to a report of a gunshot inside the Subway on Stoneridge Lane. Officers discovered 71-year-old Gary Frantz on the floor with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police said Frantz was a restaurant customer who was shot in the head with a semi-automatic weapon while standing in line to buy food.
Outside the restaurant, officers came across William Marshall III, 31, who was sitting on the curb naked. Employees and witnesses on the site recognized Marshall as the shooter.
Marshall was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment in April 2025. He was declared competent to stand trial in June 2025.
Marshall received a sentence of 25 to 30.5 years in jail on Thursday, according to the court bailiff. He was initially charged with two counts of murder and one act of felonious assault, but according to the bailiff, one of the accusations was reduced to involuntary manslaughter.
