A routine traffic stop escalated into a major narcotics investigation that led to the seizure of more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in a trailer and at the suspect’s home, according to law enforcement officials.

During the stop, detectives claimed finding roughly 396 kilos (or 873 pounds) of meth stashed inside a false compartment of a trailer.

Authorities say an armed suspect was apprehended at the scene, but his identification has not been revealed at this time.

Officers conducted additional investigations, which led them to the suspect’s residence.

There, they discovered an additional 73 kilograms (or 160 pounds) of meth, as well as an unidentified amount of cash thought to be related to the suspected enterprise.

Officials have not yet revealed information about probable charges, but the size of the seizure is one of the largest recent methamphetamine recoveries in the region.

The Houston Police Department’s Narcotics Division, Squad 5, conducted the investigation in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Galveston Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Houston, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

“We thank our partners for their continued commitment to keeping dangerous drugs off our streets,” the HPD stated in a Facebook post announcing the seizure.

The investigation is underway.
