A New Orleans man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges stemming from a scheme to defraud the Louisiana Department of Education, federal court officials announced Wednesday.
Demietriek Scott, 50, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to conduct wire fraud in connection with a plot to obtain Louisiana Child Care Assistance Provider grant funds from the Louisiana Department of Education.
The LaCAP funds were supposed to be used during a presidentially declared major disaster or emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scott and the previously convicted Romney Manuel planned to steal $74,250 in federal monies from the Louisiana Department of Education using falsified spreadsheets and data systems between April 2020 and March 2021, according to a federal judge.
After the scam was discovered, Manuel was sacked from his position as a program consultant in the Office of Early Childhood Operations.
Scott and Manuel risk up to thirty years in prison and a $1 million fine.
