A Los Angeles man has been taken into custody on felony charges after authorities said he purposely fired a flare pistol during a neighborhood quarrel, causing a brush fire in Woodland Hills.

The incident occurred on April 20 in the 23000 block of Del Valle Street, where the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a brush fire allegedly ignited by a person discharging a flare pistol, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers from the LAPD’s Topanga Division identified the suspect as Roy Azimi, 43, of Los Angeles. The matter was then referred to the department’s Major Crimes Division for additional investigation.

Detectives found that Azimi purposefully discharged multiple flare rounds during a neighborhood quarrel. Investigators said one of the flares struck foliage near a victim’s home, causing a brush fire.

Azimi was detained on May 21 in Rosemead on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and recklessly starting a fire. He was booked under the reference number 7243423.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office investigated the incident and filed two felony charges: assault with a deadly weapon and carelessly setting a fire.

The investigation is underway.
