A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck just west of Las Vegas Thursday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at approximately 1:47 p.m., about seven miles west of Summerlin in the Red Rock Canyon area.

The magnitude was downgraded to 3.8 from an initial reading of 4.1. Residents reported feeling shaking as far west as Pahrump, though no damage has been reported.

The USGS forecasts a 33% chance of a 3.0-or-greater aftershock within the next week.

The USGS initially reported a smaller, 3.1-magnitude earthquake north of Mesquite, Nevada. That report has since been removed from the USGS website.
