A teacher has been sentenced to prison for raping a schoolgirl he lured to his home under the pretense of extra tuition.
Gary Day-Davies was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting the pupil both at the Salford school where he taught and at his home, with the offenses taking place between 2006 and 2009. Day-Davies enticed the young victim to his house for additional tutoring, where he gave her drugs and alcohol before carrying out sexual assaults against her.
The abuse extended into the school itself, where the teacher sexually assaulted the victim in the library and a classroom closet. The courageous victim came forward to Greater Manchester Police in 2022, triggering a full-scale investigation, reports Mirror UK.
Day-Davies, now 55, consistently denied all allegations, claiming the victim “must have just held a bit of a grudge” against him.
However, a jury found Day-Davies, from Swinton, Greater Manchester, guilty of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of sexual assault by touching of a child. Liverpool Crown Court handed him a 15-year prison sentence on June 8.
During the court proceedings, the victim delivered a powerful impact statement, declaring: “Since receiving the news of the guilty verdicts, I feel like an enormous weight was lifted off my shoulders.”
“The emotional trauma bond that I have endured for the last 20 years has finally severed.”
“I can eventually breathe and think for myself without constant fear of the consequences. I finally have justice – this is justice not for me as a child but now as an adult too.”
Rape victim comes forward 20 years later
“As much as the outcome gives me some form of closure, I have not fully processed the full extent of this situation yet.”
“I know I have a long road ahead of me in terms of recovery and I am very much looking forward to see what the future looks like for me.”
Inspector Dave Ogden from the Criminal Investigation Department in Salford said: “Day-Davies exploited the young age of the survivor to invite her to his home and sexually abuse her.”
Throughout the investigation, Day-Davies denied all allegations, offering little explanation in his defense and claiming the victim simply held a “grudge” against him.
There’s no statute of limitations on reporting rape in the U.K.
“He further sexually abused the survivor in the library and store cupboard in a classroom. Time is no barrier when it comes to being sexually abused – no matter how long ago it was, or how old you were at the time, we will listen to you.”
“We will support you, investigate, and act robustly against perpetrators. We will take your allegations seriously and treat you with dignity and respect.”
