A convicted child molester wanted out of California was apprehended in Scottsdale on Saturday after nearly ten months on the run, authorities said.

The FBI Phoenix Desert Hawk Fugitive Task Force apprehended Carl W. Cacconie around 9 a.m., according to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI Sacramento Field Office.

The task force includes FBI agents, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and US Border Patrol agents.

On July 17, 2025, Cacconie was convicted in El Dorado County, California, of six counts of indecent actions on a child under the age of 14.

Cacconie was set to be sentenced on August 25, 2025, but a judge dismissed prosecutors’ request to keep him in detention until then. He was released on $1 million bond after giving up his passport and being placed on a monitoring device.

Authorities stated that the device ceased transmitting on August 17, 2025. He was last spotted five days later in San Francisco.

On the day of his scheduled sentencing, Cacconie’s family informed the court that he had gone missing. They also stated that he left behind his phone, wallet, and a suicide note.

On May 14, a federal arrest warrant was issued for Cacconie in the Eastern District of California for unauthorized flight.

Investigators eventually tracked him down to Scottsdale, where he was captured by a fugitive task force stationed in Phoenix.

Cacconie is anticipated to make his initial court appearance in Scottsdale before being extradited to California for sentencing.

“We are deeply grateful to our federal partners, whose collaboration was invaluable in locating and apprehending Cacconie,” El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson said in a prepared statement. “While nothing can erase the harm caused, we hope today’s outcome offers a measure of peace to Cacconie’s survivor and family, knowing that he will now finally be held accountable and sentenced for his crimes.”
