LANCASTER, Calif. – A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy suffered injuries and gunfire killed a male suspect in a deputy involved shooting Saturday afternoon in an unincorporated area of Lancaster, authorities said.
A Lancaster sheriff’s station deputy responded to a call about a man brandishing two knives near Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway.
The suspect stabbed the deputy, prompting a deputy involved shooting, according to the sheriff’s department.
Homicide investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene at about 2 p.m.
Paramedics transported the deputy to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Gunfire struck the suspect, and paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Sheriff Robert G. Luna said the injured deputy is expected to recover.
“We are grateful that our deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be returning home to their loved ones,” Luna said. “Incidents like this are a stark reminder that every day, law enforcement professionals like our Deputies step into unpredictable and rapidly evolving situations in service to protecting our communities.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
