A 21-year-old Massachusetts man was taken into custody at a local motel on Friday evening after accidentally shooting into an occupied neighboring room, according to authorities.
Carter Delleo was detained after authorities responded to a gunshot at the America’s Best Value Inn on Stonington Road, according to Stonington Deputy Police Chief Todd Olson.
Olson said a caller reported a bullet entering a nearby room, and officers saw damage consistent with a round penetrating through the wall between the rooms.
The motel room was inhabited at the time of the incident, but no one was hurt, according to Olson.
According to Olson, Delleo accidentally discharged a Glock 19 9-mm handgun in his motel room, resulting in the incident. Delleo admitted that the pistol discharged while he was handling it,” Olson stated. “Officers also learned he tried to conceal the damage after the incident.”
According to Olson, cops took Delleo’s weapon, a 15-round high-capacity magazine, and his Massachusetts gun license.
Delleo was charged with illegal firearm discharge, first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and breach of peace, he said.
Olson stated that Delleo was eventually freed on a $25,000 bail and assigned a July 2 court date.
