A woman was killed in a shooting at a Clear Lake apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon, according to Houston police. The man was later apprehended following a chase.
Officers were dispatched at 2 p.m. to a complex on El Dorado Boulevard near the Gulf Freeway with reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they discovered an adult woman who had been shot at least once in an apartment. She was brought to a hospital and eventually died.
Police say the woman was inside the apartment with her two teenage kids when a man arrived on a bicycle and fired several shots into the room. At least one bullet hit the woman.
Investigators believe the shooting was intentional.
Police believe the shot was fired through a window near the top of a staircase inside the apartment, where the victim was thought to be standing at the time.
Police discovered the suspect was living nearby and apprehended him at his home. He fled away, and authorities lost track of him. A police aircraft hunting for him using heat detection discovered an extremely warm garbage can in a home’s back yard.
Cops evacuated the residents of the home and approached the garbage with K-9 cops. The man attempted to flee, jumping a fence before officers surrounded him. He was brought into custody.
According to police, the suspect, who is believed to be 17 or 18 years old, was unarmed when arrested.
His name was not disclosed.
Later in the afternoon, family members and friends arrived at the complex, many of whom were visibly distraught upon learning of the woman’s death.
