72-year-old cyclist dies after being hit by vehicle in Santa Ana

A 72-year-old bicyclist was killed after a driver struck him at a busy intersection in Santa Ana.

On Sept. 4, Santa Ana officers working near McFadden Avenue and Fairview Street witnessed the collision shortly before 7 p.m.

“The bicyclist was beginning to travel westbound on McFadden Ave. from Fairview St. when he was rear-ended by a vehicle traveling in the same direction,” police said.

The impact threw the elderly man from his bicycle. Officers immediately rushed to his aid and found him lying in the roadway with significant injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver who struck him remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police said the driver did not appear to be impaired.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the 72-year-old victim until they notify his next of kin.

The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate the fatal crash.
