Trump targets Roy Cooper on crime as he backs Michael Whatley in North Carolina Senate race

President Donald J. Trump used Truth Social to lambast former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s criminal‑justice record and to urge voters to support Republican Michael Whatley for the U.S. Senate.

In his post, Trump claimed that Cooper freed dozens of convicted killers from state custody amid the pandemic.

“Former Governor Roy Cooper, of North Carolina, let out 83 murderers, 51 were serving life sentences, and 25 immediately committed murders after being let out of penitentiaries across the State,” Trump wrote. “They were released by him because he didn’t want them to catch COVID while in prison. There has never been a Governor with such a bad record on Crime, and there never will be!”

Trump then invoked the 1988 presidential race, referencing former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis and the Willie Horton incident, where a convicted felon committed violent crimes while on a state prison furlough.

“Governor Michael Dukakis lost his insurmountable lead in the 1988 Presidential Race because he released Willie Horton, who went on to immediately rape and kill three women,” Trump stated. “What Former Governor Roy Cooper did is, believe it or not, far more consequential.”

He wrapped up his remarks with a clear endorsement for North Carolina’s Senate race: “VOTE FOR MICHAEL WHATLEY TO BE THE NEXT U.S. SENATOR FROM THE GREAT STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA!”

Michael Whatley, who previously chaired the North Carolina Republican Party and served on the Republican National Committee, is contesting the Senate seat in a closely watched race where public safety and prior state policies dominate the conversation.
