Deschutes County jury convicts Sunriver family in child abuse case

On This Post

A jury in Deschutes County, Oregon has convicted three members of a Sunriver, Oregon family for torturing and abusing a 10-year-old child in their care.

Sarah Session and her parents, Gary Hardenburg and Paula Hardenburg, were arrested last year after authorities found them hiding in a hotel in Coos County, Oregon.

The case began after Session’s stepson was hospitalized with serious injuries, including suspected salt poisoning. According to testimony, the child told investigators he had been starved, beaten with a curtain rod and forced to eat his own vomit.

Jurors found Session guilty of nine charges, including second-degree assault and criminal mistreatment. She was acquitted on several other charges, and an attempted murder charge against her had previously been dismissed.

Paula Hardenburg was convicted on all six charges she faced, including second-degree assault and criminal mistreatment. Gary Hardenburg was found guilty on all three charges against him, including criminal mistreatment and evidence tampering.

The three defendants are scheduled to be sentenced April 3.
