Prosecutors say a 25-year-old man is accused of strangling and killing his mother at her home in La Pine , according to court records.
Authorities allege that Gavaughn Bates killed his 56-year-old mother, ErmaJean McGillicuddy. Bates faces charges of second-degree murder, two counts of strangulation and unlawful use of a weapon.
Court documents state that Bates allegedly strangled his mother and attempted to use a knife during the attack. Officials have not yet released an official cause of death.
According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, two minors witnessed part of the incident inside the home.
Deputies arrested Bates around 2 a.m. Monday after responding to reports of suspicious circumstances at Gordy’s Truck Stop, where they found him.
Afterward, deputies went to McGillicuddy’s residence and discovered her dead at the scene. The two children were removed from the home and connected with support services.
The case remains under investigation.
