Authorities issued a shelter-in-place notice Saturday afternoon for residents in part of Eugene as police responded to an armed and suicidal individual.

According to the Eugene Police Department, the alert covers the area between 22nd and 27th avenues from Tyler Street to Friendly Street in the city’s Friendly neighborhood.

Police said the individual was in a tree and armed, prompting officers to ask nearby residents to remain inside while negotiators worked to convince the person to come down safely.

Emergency dispatch logs show that multiple police, fire and medical crews were sent to the area shortly after 2:14 p.m. Saturday.

Officials also urged the public to avoid the area while the situation remained active. The incident was still developing as authorities continued their response.
