On This Post

A Portland man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a fatal early-morning shooting outside a Northeast Portland convenience store, authorities confirmed.

Shooting Linked to Relationship Dispute

David L. Carter, 59, received the sentence on Friday after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the killing of 45-year-old Bruce O. Glass. Prosecutors said the violence stemmed from a personal conflict involving a romantic relationship with the same woman.

As part of a plea agreement, a murder charge against Carter was reduced in exchange for his guilty plea.

Details of the Fatal Incident

According to court records, the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. on May 5, 2024, in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven store on Northeast Weidler Street.

Investigators said Glass had parked his BMW X5 at the location when Carter arrived on a bicycle. Carter then entered the passenger seat of the vehicle and opened fire, shooting Glass multiple times in the stomach.

Despite managing to exit the vehicle, Glass collapsed and died at the scene.

Emotional Testimony in Court

During the sentencing hearing, family members described Glass as a devoted and protective father figure whose loss has had a lasting impact.

Relatives recounted the devastating moment they learned of his death, highlighting the emotional toll on loved ones and the wider family.

Carter reportedly remained silent during the proceedings as the victim’s family addressed the court.

Sentence and Legal Outcome

Multnomah County Circuit Judge Andrew Lavin sentenced Carter to 18 years in prison and ruled that he would receive credit for time already served.
