A grieving family is honoring the life of a 19-year-old driver who died in a devastating crash that sent a car into the Willamette River, claiming three lives earlier this week.
Fatal Crash in Downtown Portland
According to authorities, the crash occurred early Monday morning in Portland when a vehicle carrying four young people plunged into the river near Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
Police said the car, driven by Roberto Garcia-Chavez, was seen speeding the wrong way and running red lights around 2 a.m. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading to the fatal incident.
Three people — Garcia-Chavez, a 17-year-old friend, and a 20-year-old passenger — were killed. One survivor was transported to the hospital.
Family Reflects on Life Beyond the Tragedy
Garcia-Chavez’s sister described him as a loving, vibrant person whose life extended far beyond the events of that night.
“He was more than just what people saw,” she said, urging others not to judge him solely based on the crash.
Known to family and friends as “Berto,” he had a passion for movies, cars, and games. He also competed in chess tournaments and recently graduated from high school, where he participated in Junior ROTC.
Final Hours Before the Crash
On the day before the tragedy, Garcia-Chavez spent time with family, attending an Easter service and visiting an arcade before meeting friends later that evening.
The group had planned a night out in downtown Portland, including riding electric scooters, but the night ended in tragedy.
Ongoing Search and Investigation
Authorities have recovered the bodies of Garcia-Chavez and one of the victims, while search efforts continue for the third person who remains missing in the river.
Investigators are still working to determine the exact sequence of events that led the car from city streets, across a park, and into the water.
A Family’s Painful Loss
The tragedy has deeply affected the family, who are now coping with another devastating loss. Garcia-Chavez’s mother had previously lost a son and her father in a separate car accident years earlier.
Despite the heartbreak, his family is focusing on remembering the young man he was — a brother, son, and friend whose life was cut short too soon.
