Lawmakers in Oregon have approved legislation creating a task force aimed at expanding ocean-based industries while protecting the state’s coastal environment.

The Senate Bill 1525, passed by the Oregon Legislature with bipartisan support, establishes a Blue Economy Task Force focused on supporting economic growth along the Oregon Coast.

Supporters say the initiative will help advance industries such as marine biotechnology, sustainable aquaculture, fishing, research and coastal tourism while maintaining environmental protections.

State Sen. Janeen Sollman said the state has strong potential to expand its ocean economy due to its coastline, workforce and research institutions.

Meanwhile, Sen. David Brock, vice chair of the Senate Energy and Environment Committee, said the task force will respond to calls from fishermen, researchers and coastal business owners seeking more state support for economic development.

Environmental groups have also expressed support for the initiative. Charlie Plybon of the Surfrider Foundation said the effort could strengthen coastal economies while safeguarding ocean ecosystems.

The task force will include at least 13 members from sectors such as the Oregon Senate and House, coastal lawmakers and research institutions. Members will evaluate existing programs and develop a strategic plan for the state’s growing ocean industries.
