Authorities responded Thursday to reports of a possible active shooter at Temple Israel, a synagogue that also houses a school, in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, according to multiple federal law enforcement sources.
Emergency crews rushed to the location after reports that gunfire may have occurred and that a vehicle had been driven into the building. The situation prompted an immediate law enforcement response as officials worked to secure the area.
In a statement posted online, the Jewish Federation of Detroit said it was aware of an active security situation at the synagogue and confirmed that police were on the scene. The organization also said Jewish institutions in the region had entered a precautionary lockdown and urged residents to stay away from the area.
Temple Israel includes an Early Childhood Center that serves as a preschool, daycare and kindergarten program.
Because of the nearby incident, the Bloomfield Hills Schools district placed its campuses in “secure mode,” according to the Bloomfield Township Police Department.
West Bloomfield Township is located about 25 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan.
Authorities continue to investigate the situation, and more information is expected as the response unfolds.
