Shamrock Run expected to close roads and alter transit routes in Portland

On This Post

Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the annual  Shamrock Run Portland, leading to road closures and transit changes in parts of Portland on Sunday morning.

Organizers estimate that around 19,000 participants will join the race events, which will send runners through downtown and several neighborhoods in southwest Portland.

Road closures begin early Sunday

The first race begins at 7:20 a.m. along Southwest Naito Parkway, between the Hawthorne Bridge and the Burnside Bridge.

Officials say northbound traffic on the parkway will be closed as early as 5 a.m. to prepare for the event.

Drivers should expect delays and detours on several nearby roads, including:

  • Barbur Boulevard

  • Terwilliger Boulevard

  • Capitol Highway

Transportation officials recommend motorists use alternate routes when traveling into or out of downtown during the race.

Transit routes also affected

Public transportation will also be impacted during the event. The regional transit agency TriMet said eight bus routes will be detoured between 6 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and some bus stops may be temporarily closed.

TriMet also expects higher ridership than usual as runners and spectators travel downtown using buses and MAX light rail.

Race events continue through early afternoon

Most race events are scheduled to finish by 1 p.m., after which roads will gradually reopen once all participants clear the course.

Celebrations will continue afterward with a post-race gathering at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, where runners and spectators can attend an after-party lasting into the afternoon.
