Convicted Killer Who Confessed to Three Oregon Murders Dies in Prison at 76

On This Post

A convicted murderer who admitted to killing three people in Oregon decades ago has died while serving a life sentence in prison.

Death in Custody

Jeffrey Paul Cutlip, who later changed his name to Jesse Andre D’Breeze, died Sunday at the Two Rivers Correctional Institution, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.

The 76-year-old had been in custody since 2014 and passed away while receiving hospice care.

Confession That Solved Cold Cases

Cutlip was first arrested in 2012 in Brownsville after calling 911 and telling authorities he wanted to confess to “bad things” he had done years earlier.

His admission led investigators to solve multiple cold cases spanning nearly two decades.

Details of the Murders

Authorities said Cutlip confessed to three killings:

  • Marline Claire Carlson (1975)
A 44-year-old woman found dead in her Portland apartment. Cutlip admitted to strangling her with a phone cord.
  • Julie Marie Bennett (1977)
A 15-year-old girl whose death was initially ruled an accidental drowning. Her case was reopened after new information surfaced, leading to Cutlip’s confession.
  • Nielen Loribell Doll (1993)
A 33-year-old woman from Spokane who was strangled after meeting him at a Portland bar.

Sentence and Legacy

Cutlip was serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for murder and aggravated murder convictions.

His confessions brought long-awaited answers to victims’ families and helped close cases that had remained unsolved for years.
