An armed smash-and-grab robbery at Washington Square Mall triggered a multi-agency police pursuit Saturday evening, after suspects stole jewelry and fled across state lines, authorities said.
Robbery at Jewelry Store
According to the Tigard Police Department, the incident occurred around 6 p.m. at a Kay Jewelers store inside the mall.
Investigators said two suspects carried out the robbery—one armed with a gun and the other wielding a sledgehammer. The pair smashed a display case, grabbed jewelry, and quickly fled the scene.
Officials have not yet determined the total value of the stolen items.
Suspects Flee in Getaway Vehicle
Police described the incident as a classic “smash-and-grab.” The suspects reportedly did not fire the weapon and escaped in a dark-colored sedan immediately after the theft.
High-Speed Pursuit Across Multiple Jurisdictions
Authorities said the suspects quickly moved beyond Tigard city limits, prompting a coordinated response from several law enforcement agencies.
Officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Portland Police Bureau joined the pursuit as the vehicle traveled through downtown Portland and onto Interstate 5.
Suspects Escape Into Washington State
The chase ended when the suspects crossed into Washington, where Oregon authorities discontinued the pursuit.
As of now, no arrests have been made and the suspects have not been publicly identified.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities continue to investigate the robbery and are working to identify those involved.
The parent company of Kay Jewelers, Signet Jewelers, has not issued a statement, referring inquiries to local law enforcement.
