NEWPORT, OR — A state employee has been arrested after police say she attempted to set fire to a government building that houses a Department of Human Services office.

Suspect Accused of Attempting to Ignite Building

According to the Newport Police Department, 45-year-old Bridgette Sherman of Eugene was taken into custody Monday following reports of suspicious activity near the Avery Building on Northeast Avery Street.

Investigators say Sherman allegedly:

  • Purchased gasoline from a nearby convenience store
  • Poured the fuel around the exterior of the building
  • Left behind a cigarette soaked in gasoline in an apparent attempt to ignite the fire

Fire Failed to Ignite

Police said the cigarette showed signs of being lit but did not ignite the gasoline, preventing what could have been a serious fire.

Officers located Sherman just feet away from the scene, along with an empty gas can.

Building Was Unoccupied

Authorities confirmed that the Avery Building — which includes offices for the Department of Human Services — was empty at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.

Sherman was booked into the Lincoln County Jail on suspicion of arson.

As of the latest update, formal charges had not yet appeared in court records, and the investigation remains ongoing.
