DOUGLAS COUNTY, OR — A truck driver has been arrested following a deadly crash on Interstate 5 that claimed the life of an 18-year-old and left two others seriously injured, according to the Oregon State Police.
Crash Details and Timeline
The collision occurred around 3 p.m. Monday near milepost 90, close to Canyonville.
Investigators say a Freightliner commercial truck, driven by 61-year-old Brenden Larry Christensen of San Diego, stalled while traveling uphill in the northbound lane. Authorities noted the vehicle had reportedly stalled multiple times before the crash.
Moments later, a Honda CR-V driven by 18-year-old Davin Jack Smith crashed into the stalled truck.
Victim Identified, Family Members Injured
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers in the Honda — identified as Lawrence Wayne Smith Jr., 60, and Annika Jace Smith, 18 — sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to nearby hospitals. Police confirmed they are part of the same family, including the victim’s twin sibling.
Another passenger, 19-year-old Ivan Amadeo Gonzalez, suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance.
Vehicles Catch Fire After Impact
Authorities said the force of the crash caused both the Honda and cargo from the truck to ignite, adding to the severity of the incident.
The truck driver was not injured.
DUI and Manslaughter Charges Filed
Following the investigation, police arrested Christensen on charges including:
- Driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII)
- Manslaughter
Officials believe impairment may have contributed to the crash.
Traffic Disruptions and Ongoing Investigation
The highway was closed for approximately three hours while crews responded and investigators processed the scene.
