Authorities temporarily shut down a section of Southeast Division Street in Portland on Thursday afternoon as officers responded to a report involving an armed individual in crisis.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, the road closure stretched between César E. Chávez Boulevard and Southeast 50th Avenue while crisis negotiation teams were deployed to the scene.
The situation began when Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to reports of smoke coming from an apartment in the Richmond neighborhood. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a person reportedly armed with an edged weapon.
Police quickly secured the area and called in specialized negotiators to handle the situation. Officials confirmed that there was no active fire at the apartment complex, but nearby units were evacuated as a precaution to ensure residents’ safety.
