U.S. Man Arrested in Bahamas After Wife Goes Missing at Sea During Boat Trip

On This Post

A U.S. man has been arrested in the Bahamas after his wife disappeared while the couple was traveling by boat, sparking an ongoing investigation involving local authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Husband Denies Wrongdoing Amid Investigation

Brian Hooker has strongly denied any involvement in his wife’s disappearance. His attorney, Terrel Butler, stated that Hooker is fully cooperating with investigators and “categorically” rejects any allegations against him. Due to the active investigation, no further comments have been made on his behalf.

Authorities confirmed that the 59-year-old man was taken into custody in Abaco and is currently being questioned. Officials have not disclosed whether formal charges have been filed.

Woman Reportedly Fell Overboard Near Elbow Cay

According to investigators, 55-year-old Lynette Hooker was traveling in a small motorboat from Hope Town to Elbow Cay when the incident occurred Saturday night.

Her husband told authorities that she accidentally fell overboard while holding the boat’s keys, which caused the engine to shut off. He then reportedly paddled back to shore and notified others about the situation early Sunday morning.

Police said strong ocean currents quickly carried her away, and she was soon out of sight.

Search Efforts Continue as Family Seeks Answers

Search operations remain ongoing as authorities work to locate Lynette Hooker. The U.S. Coast Guard has also launched a criminal investigation into the case.

Family members have expressed concern and skepticism about the circumstances. Lynette’s mother, Darlene Hamlett, said she is seeking more information and plans to travel to the Bahamas. While she remains hopeful, she acknowledged that the chances of survival may be slim.

Daughter Raises Questions About Incident

Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has publicly questioned the account of events, stating that her mother was an experienced boater and unlikely to accidentally fall overboard.

She also described her mother’s relationship with Hooker as unstable at times, particularly when alcohol was involved. Despite her concerns, she emphasized the family’s desire for answers and closure.

Hooker’s attorney has dismissed these claims, reiterating his client’s denial of any wrongdoing.

Public Statement and Ongoing Probe

In a social media post, Hooker described the incident as a tragic accident caused by rough sea conditions and high winds. He said he made every effort to reach his wife but was unable to save her.

Authorities in the Bahamas continue to investigate the case, with search and rescue efforts still underway. Officials have not ruled out any possibilities as they gather more evidence.
