EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene Police responded to a traffic crash Monday evening in the 900 block of Garfield Street involving a vehicle and a bicycle.
The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on April 13 and forced officials to shut down Garfield Street for about two hours.
According to authorities, a Lane Transit District (LTD) bus was traveling southbound in the number-one lane on Garfield Street and approaching W. 9th Place when a man on a bicycle rode from west to east onto Garfield Street without checking for traffic.
The LTD bus struck the bicyclist, identified as 43-year-old Gordon Douglas Barnes.
Emergency crews transported Barnes to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers initially cited him for failing to use a bicycle lane.
Eugene Police later said they will reissue the citation as failure of a driver entering a roadway to yield the right of way.
“Although bicyclists can treat stop signs as a yield, they must yield,” EPD stated. “The citation for Failing to Use Bicycle Lane will be rescinded.”
