The man accused of causing a crash that injured several people, including a pregnant woman and her 9-year-old son, last year was sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
A Clark County judge imposed the punishment on Maximiliano Chavez, 27, during a hearing on Thursday. Chavez was facing many felony charges, including three counts of reckless driving and three counts of driving under the influence that resulted in bodily injury.
According to authorities, Chavez acknowledged drinking three micheladas and using a THC vape pen at a swap meet at midday. On September 6, 2025, just before 2:30 p.m., there was a crash at Windmill Lane and Las Vegas Boulevard.
According to police investigators, Chavez ran a red light and collided with a car turning left before hitting two more automobiles and injured a dozen people.
One of the collision victims was a 37-year-old lady called Rebekah, who was 29 weeks pregnant at the time. Police said her unborn child died at a neighboring hospital.
According to established LVMPD procedures, Chavez will not face a murder charge for the baby’s death.
Rebekah’s 9-year-old son was also badly injured in the crash, but he recovered and was reunited with his mother in the hospital.
Throughout the hearing, Chavez expressed regret and apologized to the victim’s family several times.
During the sentencing, Rebekah made a statement in court, expressing her disappointment that the crash had turned out to be a day of misery rather than delight. She went on to say that she is forever traumatized, both physically and emotionally.
Her family mirrored her sentiments, saying they hope this results in a positive transformation for Chavez.
They also stated that they forgive him for the incident and have no ill will toward him.
