A Wildwood man was arrested on a hit-and-run charge after his truck collided with multiple mailboxes and drove away.
Shawn Patrick Ross, 58, hit neighborhood mailboxes in Wildwood with his 2007 Ford vehicle and fled the scene about 1:45 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He did not notify the owners or contact law enforcement.
Ross’s vehicle was seen on surveillance film from an adjacent property, which helped identify him as a suspect. A deputy responded to his residence on County Road 121D in Wildwood, where he admitted to being engaged in the incident. According to the complaint, he then went outside and provided insurance information.
While a civilian crash investigator footage the scene, the deputy informed Ross that he was being investigated for leaving the crash. He said he was going back inside his house, but the deputy informed him he needed to stay outside. He continued to go back toward his home, according to the report.
The deputy insisted that he was being detained and was not permitted to leave. Ross paused briefly before continuing to walk away. The deputy instructed him to halt again, which he stopped briefly before resuming, according to the report.
At this time, the deputy informed him that he would be arrested if he did not cooperate. Ross continued walking, and the deputy reached for his arm. According to the allegation, he turned and pulled away before being tied behind his back.
The crash report was later completed, and a copy was delivered to the United States Postal Service, according to the report.
Ross was charged with hit-and-run (leaving the scene of a crash resulting in property damage) and resisting without violence. The Wisconsin native was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting a $1,500 bond.
