Authorities said a man died and another is in critical condition after a shooting outside a popular recreation center where a quinceañera was being held in Santa Clarita on Saturday night.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the 20800 block of Centre Pointe Parkway, outside the George A. Carvalho Sports Complex, at 10:50 p.m. on reports of a shooting in the parking lot.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered two men with gunshot wounds. Both were sent to a local hospital.

One of the males was eventually pronounced deceased. He has not been publicly identified. The second man is still in critical condition, according to the LASD.

A person of interest has been detained in connection with the case. It’s unclear whether they’ll be charged.

According to partygoers, children were present when the shooting occurred. “It’s a fifteen-year-old’s birthday celebration, so you teens, do anything, just have fun,” remarked a man named Gilbert who was present at the party. “My 16-year-old was here, and she was deeply touched. There’s no way to undo what she’s witnessed.”

According to the witness, one of the guys involved in the shooting was a party guest who instructed youngsters to take cover before racing to rescue the victim in the parking lot. My guys’ coworkers were here, [laying] over here by the curb, and that’s who I came out to help, putting pressure on him and the wound until paramedics and the police arrived,” Gilbert added.

An anonymous witness reported hearing two gunshots. “About 13-14 shots,” the man stated. “It is traumatic for the children. I can only speak for my daughter, and she is afraid.”

Partygoers report that everyone inside the party was detained until roughly 4 a.m. while LASD detectives investigated the event.
