What started as a routine traffic stop in Orlando ended with a 4-year-old left behind on the roadside and a driver running from deputies, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. According to deputies, the man at the center of it all has been apprehended and faces charges of hit-and-run and child neglect.
According to WESH, Orange County deputies attempted to stop a car on Powers Drive on June 9. They claim the driver, Jason Kenon, smashed into an SUV before fleeing on foot, leaving a 4-year-old child at the site.
Deputies informed investigators that Kenon temporarily allowed a man and two children out of the vehicle before fleeing. According to WESH, a photo credited to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office depicts the situation, and deputies identified Kenon as having an outstanding warrant in nearby Osceola County. After a brief pursuit, they apprehended him and arrested him.
Florida law compels drivers involved in a collision to stop and share information. According to Florida Statute 316.061, leaving the scene is a misdemeanor that can be upgraded to a felony if someone is injured.
Florida Statute 827.03 defines neglect as a caregiver’s failure to provide necessary supervision or care. Neglect can be punished as a felony if it causes or has the potential to cause substantial harm. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles states that fines for hit-and-run charges rise with the severity of the injuries and the circumstances of the crash.
According to sheriff’s investigators, the case is still active. According to WESH, deputies identified the defendant due to an outstanding warrant prior to the stop and arrested him during the brief chase. Prosecutors will analyze the findings and decide whether to file formal charges. At the time of publication, the sheriff’s office had not provided any information about bond or court dates.
