A Memphis man with multiple violent felony convictions is facing drug and weapons charges after police say they discovered fentanyl, methamphetamine, firearms, and drug paraphernalia during an investigation at an airport hotel.

According to the West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force, investigators wrapped up an investigation into the suspected fentanyl sale from a room at the Deluxe Inn & Suites on Lamar Avenue on June 10.

During the investigation, agents from the task force, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Memphis office pulled over 43-year-old Stephen Shelby.

During the stop, investigators reported seizing around a quarter-ounce of fentanyl and a half-ounce of methamphetamine.

The investigation eventually led agents to execute a search warrant at a hotel room at the Deluxe Inn & Suites, where they said they discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun.22-caliber derringer-style pistol and computerized scales are frequently used in drug sales.

According to an affidavit, agents discovered Shelby’s clothing and prescription medication bottles bearing his name inside the room. Shelby told investigators that he stored clothing in the room and had the room key.

Shelby had past Shelby County convictions for facilitation of first-degree murder, facilitation of exceptionally aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, theft of goods, and felony possession of a weapon.

Shelby’s offenses, according to authorities, barred him from possessing firearms legally.

Shelby was charged with possessing a handgun by a convicted felon as well as drug paraphernalia. The task force stated that further charges were being sought, including possession of Schedule II substances for sale, possession of a firearm by a convicted criminal, and possession of a weapon while committing a violent offense.

“It is occasionally forgotten that this is the West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force. We focus on the link between violence and the drug trade. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy stated that this case is a solid illustration.

Task Force Director Johnie Carter complimented the agencies that participated in the inquiry.

“The beauty of the West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force is the ability to join multiple people of different expertise from multiple agencies together to come up with the desired end result and in this case, that is getting a violent individual who peddles poison like fentanyl and meth to our citizens,” Carter stated. “I appreciate the partnerships and give kudos to the fine men and women who made Memphis a little safer yesterday.”

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office will pursue the case.
