A woman died and more than 30 others, including children, suffered injuries Saturday morning when a jackknifed semitruck triggered a crash on the 210 Freeway in Irwindale, authorities said.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred shortly before 9 a.m. just west of Irwindale Avenue, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log. Crews closed all westbound lanes for several hours, along with three eastbound lanes, snarling traffic in both directions. The freeway has since reopened.
The big rig was traveling eastbound when it crashed through the center median and struck a vehicle on the westbound side of the freeway.
A CHP spokesperson said a woman died at the scene. Authorities had not immediately identified her.
A Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson said paramedics transported ten people to hospitals, including two with critical injuries and eight with minor injuries. Six of those patients were juveniles.
The spokesperson said 22 other people suffered minor injuries but declined transport to a medical center.
The Highway Patrol reported that at least three vehicles were involved in the pileup, though the precise number remained unclear.
Investigators were working to determine the cause of the crash.
