A 66-year-old golf cart driver was detained early Wednesday morning when a deputy spotted him driving on the wrong side of U.S. Highway 441 near Stonecrest in Summerfield.

At around 2 a.m., a Marion County Sheriff’s Office officer noticed Matthew Goff of Summerfield driving a maroon Club Car golf cart in the opposing traffic lane on U.S. Hwy. 441 near Southeast 173rd Street. The deputy noticed that the golf cart was becoming a hazard for oncoming automobiles.

The deputy began a traffic stop on Southeast 109th Terrace Road at Southeast 173rd Street. Goff, a Cincinnati native, handed the deputy his identification card and acknowledged to not having a valid driver’s license.

A search of the Florida Crime Information Center indicated that Goff’s driving privileges had been suspended, and he was branded as a habitual traffic offender on March 23, 2023. According to the arrest record, he had already been convicted of driving with a suspended or revoked license on February 22, 2023.

Goff, who was detained in 2022 with methamphetamine in his wallet, was charged with chronic traffic offenses, including driving with a suspended or revoked license. He was booked into the Marion County Jail and released after posting a $1,000 bond.
