A Florida sheriff called his “Iron Bar Lodge” after seeing six passengers with outstanding warrants or alleged probation violations at Port Canaveral, preventing them from sailing the high seas.
“Oh, Ship!” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey posted in a social media post about deputies’ busy day at one of the world’s biggest cruise ports.
The most serious instance included Martell Murray, 24, of Georgia, who was arrested on an out-of-state fugitive warrant stating he violated his release terms in connection with pending murder charges, according to the sheriff’s office and Brevard County jail records.
According to authorities, the warrant was issued in response to an alleged violation in an ongoing murder investigation. The sheriff’s office did not identify the victim, provide the jurisdiction handling the case, or specify which release condition Murray allegedly violated.
Murray’s getaway was sunk with his traveling partner, Kenderia Burney, 24, who was wanted on a probation violation warrant, Ivey said.Fortunately, these two were able to spend their holiday together at the Lodge despite having different sleeping chambers,” Ivey remarked.
Murray and Burney were booked into the Brevard County Jail on July 17 and were still in detention without bond as of Wednesday, according to jail records. Murray was arrested as an out-of-state fugitive, while Burney was held on an out-of-county warrant.
The deputies’ catch of the day didn’t stop there.
Veronica Hamlet, 38, of Tampa, was detained on a failure-to-appear warrant, the sheriff said. According to Brevard County jail records, her charge was an out-of-county warrant, and she was released the next day after posting a $1,000 bond.
Ivey also reported that James Otha Brewton, 66, of Allendale, South Carolina, was arrested on a probation violation warrant. Brewton was freed on July 18 after posting a $500 bond on an out-of-county warrant, according to jail records.”It’s smooth sailing from there,” the sheriff stated.
Two more tourists had difficulties waiting for them when they returned from their cruise.
Deputies apprehended the unnamed travelers as they disembarked and discovered that they were both on felony probation but had allegedly left the country without permission from their probation officers, Ivey said.
The sheriff said the two would be staying at their respective “lodges” once probation officials finished the necessary paperwork.
Authorities did not name the passengers or divulge the crimes for which they were on probation.
The sheriff’s office did not identify the ships or cruise lines associated with the six passengers.”Whether you’re from Florida or Alaska, if you come to Brevard County and break the law or have a warrant, we’ll lock you up!!” he stated.
