Two men were apprehended in connection with a drive-by gunshot that occurred Monday at a funeral in northeast Columbus.
Trequan Hite, 19, and Shimetrious Coates-Jones, 18, were both arrested and accused in connection with the shooting. Hite was accused with fleeing and evading, while Coates-Jones was charged with four counts of felonious assault, firing a firearm on or near forbidden property, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, and unauthorized possession of dangerous ordinance.
Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of Woodland Avenue in front of Antioch Jordan Baptist Church on reports of a drive-by shooting. Two victims were discovered with gunshot wounds and transported to a hospital in stable condition. According to court papers, the gunfire came from a stolen BMW.
Officers observed individuals entering a Chrysler driven by Hite, according to court filings. He allegedly neglected to use his turn signal, and when cops attempted to stop the vehicle, he was clocked at 74 mph. The vehicle was spiked and crashed into a traffic pole, and Hite fled. Officers apprehended him shortly after.
Police found the BMW in the 600 block of Gibbard Avenue and witnessed Coates-Jones get inside it. He was eventually arrested, and officers discovered a weapon with bullet shells that matched those from the drive-by shooting.
Hite received a $100,000 bond, while Coates-Jones received a $500,000 bond in Franklin County court on Wednesday.
