A driver going at 92 mph in The Villages was pursued and detained for drunk driving.

Braeden Michael Shuler, 22, of Ocala, was arrested early Thursday after a high-speed chase that concluded at the 7-Eleven in the Beaumont complex on County Road 466A in Wildwood.

According to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was conducting traffic enforcement at Morse Boulevard and County Road 466A near the Colony Cottage Recreation Center when he noticed Shuler’s silver Toyota passenger car approaching at high speed. The vehicle, which had no license plate, was doing 92 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The deputy began a pursuit, pacing the Toyota as it reached speeds of 105 mph before Shuler pulled over at the petrol station.

The deputy ordered Shuler to exit the vehicle and quickly handcuffed him. While speaking with Shuler, the deputy saw that he had bloodshot, shiny eyes, swayed from side to side, and smelled like alcohol. During a thorough inventory of the car, the deputy discovered a half-empty 16-ounce can of White Claw hard seltzer in the center console that was still cool to touch.

Shuler was taken to Sumter County Detention Center, where he agreed to engage in field sobriety tests. He struggled during the evaluation, nearly falling over many times and struggling to maintain his balance, according to the report.

He submitted two breath samples with blood alcohol concentrations of .180 and .182, more than twice the legal limit.

Shuler was detained on misdemeanor accusations of driving under the influence, careless driving, and failure to register a vehicle. He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and then released after paying a $2,000 bond.
