A national gun rights organization has predicted a significant rise in firearm and ammunition purchases following Tuesday’s midterm elections, asserting that Democratic victories will drive consumers to stock up on weapons before newly elected officials assume office in January.
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms released the forecast on Wednesday, drawing attention to races in which Democrats secured congressional seats, gained control of state legislative chambers, and won governor’s offices across the country.
Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Bellevue-based committee, stated that political transitions frequently trigger surges in gun store activity as buyers move to anticipate stricter regulatory measures.
“We may be about to witness a surge in gun buying not seen since 2020,” Gottlieb said in a statement. “We also anticipate a flood of new, anti-Second Amendment legislation designed to further restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens, especially in states with legislatures controlled by Democrats, and from Congress.”
Gottlieb further suggested that lawmakers may move to pass restrictions targeting semiautomatic rifles and pistols before the U.S. Supreme Court determines whether those specific firearms fall under the protections of the Second Amendment.
“That could easily ignite a semi-auto buying surge, so nobody should be surprised when that happens,” Gottlieb said. “When you tell Americans they can’t have something, they rush to buy whatever it is.”
Beyond the anticipated rise in retail sales, Gottlieb expressed confidence that the election results would strengthen fundraising efforts and expand membership numbers for gun advocacy organizations, including the CCRKBA and its affiliate, the Second Amendment Foundation.
“American gun owners traditionally rally around national groups such as the CCRKBA and our sister organization, the Second Amendment Foundation, because they know we will be on the front lines, fighting in the trenches, to defend our constitutionally-protected, fundamental rights from the attacks we see coming just over the political horizon,” Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb concluded by arguing that legislative efforts to impose gun restrictions would produce the unintended consequence of stimulating commerce within the firearms industry: “Watch the gun prohibition movement to once again be unintentionally responsible for surging gun and ammunition sales, and for renewed and energized support for groups fighting to defend the American heritage and Bill of Rights.”
