A man from Franklin was taken into custody yesterday evening after a driving rage incident on Bellingham’s Maple Street.
According to court documents acquired by Boston 25, the victim was leaving work and about to turn right onto Maple Street when he noticed a red Honda pickup vehicle in front of him, which allegedly began to brake-check him.
The victim said he had a dash camera positioned near his rearview mirror.
When the victim eventually began to pass the truck, he noticed the operator holding a small handgun and pointing it directly at him.
When police got on the scene, he stated that he believed the incident was filmed on dashcam.
The officer who responded to the call examined the victim’s dash camera, and while the pickup truck was not visible at the time of the claimed incident, the footage clearly showed the driver’s registration.
A short time later, Franklin police discovered the suspect, who was still inside his car, at the 99 Restaurant in Franklin and identified him as Stephen Fahey, age 61.
The officer allegedly questioned him if he had pointed a gun at anyone, to which he said, “Yes.”
Fahey smelled strongly of cologne, and his eyes were bloodshot and blurry. He also allegedly spoke with a slur. The cop on the scene had a distinct whiff of alcohol coming from his breath.
A Ruger 9mm semi-automatic weapon was recovered stashed beneath a black bag in the front passenger seat. The firearm allegedly had six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Officers continued to investigate the vehicle, discovering three empty Michelob Ultra beer cans within the black backpack that was placed over the handgun. Fahey was then arrested.
Fahey told detectives he was driving on Maple Street after leaving Walmart on his way to get dinner at the 99 and thought the vehicle coming on to Maple Street would pull into traffic in front of him, but it did not.
He stated that he believed the victim’s vehicle was following him too closely. When asked directly if he pulled a handgun on the victim, he denied doing so.
Fahey was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm while inebriated, and disturbing the peace.
Fahey took a preliminary breath test and blew a .148. When he was bailed out, he told an officer, “It’s my fault.”
He appeared in Milford District Court this morning.
