A man was arrested Thursday in Springfield, Oregon after a police pursuit ended when his vehicle became stuck against a retaining wall.

According to the Springfield Police Department, officers first responded around 12:20 p.m. to a report of a disorderly subject in the 600 block of Lochaven Avenue. Investigators determined there was probable cause to arrest Kevin Wayne Downs for fourth-degree assault, but he had already left the area before officers arrived.

Later that evening, around 6:30 p.m., an officer spotted Downs’ vehicle traveling north on Gateway Street and attempted a traffic stop. Police said Downs fled, leading officers on a pursuit through nearby parking lots.

The chase ended when Downs tried to drive over a berm near International Way and his vehicle became stuck against a retaining wall.

Downs then attempted to run away on foot but was apprehended by police K-9 Poker and taken into custody.

Police said Downs was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into the Lane County Jail.

He faces several charges, including fourth-degree assault, driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, attempting to elude police by vehicle and on foot, and first-degree criminal mischief.
