Several roads across Portland remained closed Monday after landslides, a sinkhole, fallen trees and downed power lines created hazardous conditions in multiple neighborhoods.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation said the closures were caused by days of heavy rainfall that destabilized hillsides and damaged sections of roadway.
Roads affected by closures
Transportation officials reported that at least five roads were impacted:
-
Southwest Fairmount Boulevard between Southwest Marquam Hill Road and Southwest Mt. Adams Drive after trees fell and a landslide blocked the road.
-
North Interstate Avenue southbound near North Tillamook Street due to mud and standing water.
-
Southwest 45th Drive between Southwest Taylors Ferry Road and Garden Home Road following a landslide that also brought down trees and power lines.
-
Northwest Rio Vista Terrace at Northwest Monte Vista Terrace because of another landslide.
-
Northwest Cornell Road westbound near Northwest Eloise Lane after a landslide created a sinkhole in the pavement.
Officials said repair crews were continuing work Monday as they assess the damage and clear debris.
Extended closure possible on Fairmount Boulevard
Transportation officials warned that the closure on Southwest Fairmount Boulevard could last longer than others.
Engineers are still evaluating the slope and stabilizing the area before repairs can begin. According to the bureau, geotechnical experts are examining the site to determine what work is required to prevent further movement.
Local traffic can still reach areas up to the slide location, and detours are available for drivers who need to travel beyond the closure.
Drivers urged to follow road closure signs
The transportation bureau also raised concerns about motorists ignoring posted closure signs.
Officials said driving past barricades can create dangerous conditions for both drivers and crews working in the area.
Motorists traveling near Northwest Cornell Road are being directed to use Northwest Thompson Road to reach Northwest Skyline Boulevard while repairs continue.
Authorities have not yet provided a timeline for when all affected roads will reopen.
