Pest season arrives early as mild winter disrupts Central Oregon

On This Post

An unusually mild winter is triggering an early surge in pests across Central Oregon, with experts warning that warmer conditions could worsen infestations and strain local ecosystems.

In Bend and surrounding areas, pest control companies are already reporting a rise in activity. Officials from Terminix say they’ve seen a noticeable increase in calls related to ants and termites, with expectations of more wasp activity as temperatures continue to climb.

According to industry experts, seasonal patterns heavily influence pest behavior. Warmer winters disrupt normal life cycles, causing insects like odorous house ants and carpenter ants to emerge earlier and in greater numbers.

The Oregon Department of Forestry also cautioned that rising temperatures allow pests to reproduce more frequently, potentially leading to population spikes. This can place additional stress on trees and forest ecosystems already dealing with drought and heat-related challenges.

Forest specialists note that while a single year may not cause severe long-term damage, repeated seasons of elevated temperatures and pest activity can weaken forests over time.

Officials emphasize the need for proactive monitoring and planning, as climate-driven changes continue to influence pest patterns across the region
