Residents in the eastern Oregon city of Ontario have been urged to boil their water following a malfunction at the local water treatment facility, city officials confirmed on Sunday.
The advisory comes after a pump failure disrupted operations at the municipal treatment plant early in the day. Although systems were later restored, authorities are taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
City Manager Dan Cummings stated that while the system is now functioning normally, residents should boil all water intended for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth for at least one minute before use.
Why the Boil Water Advisory Was Issued
Officials explained that equipment failure can compromise water quality, potentially allowing harmful contaminants to enter the system. As a result, precautionary boil water notices are issued until testing confirms the water supply is safe.
Laboratory testing is currently underway, but authorities have not provided a confirmed timeline for when the advisory will be lifted. Early estimates suggest results could be available within a few days.
Public Safety Guidelines for Residents
Until further notice, residents are advised to:
- Boil tap water for at least one minute before consumption
- Avoid using unboiled water for cooking or drinking
- Use bottled or boiled water for infants and vulnerable individuals
The city, which has a population of approximately 12,000, is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will notify residents once the water supply is deemed safe.
Ongoing Monitoring and Updates
Local officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are coordinating with health authorities to ensure compliance with safety standards. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official city announcements.
