Residents and visitors along the Oregon Coast will have the opportunity to learn vital disaster preparedness skills as the Tsunami 101 Roadshow returns this spring.
Community Workshops on Tsunami Safety
The Oregon Department of Emergency Management is partnering with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and the National Weather Service to host a series of free workshops in coastal communities.
The program brings emergency experts directly to local areas to share practical, potentially life-saving information about earthquake and tsunami preparedness.
What Attendees Will Learn
The sessions will cover:
- How tsunamis form and impact coastal regions
- Recognizing natural warning signs of a tsunami
- Understanding local evacuation zones
- Creating family emergency communication plans
- Building disaster supply kits
Officials encourage residents to be “two-weeks ready,” meaning households should have enough food, water, and essentials to remain self-sufficient for at least 14 days after a disaster.
Focus on Preparedness
Organizers say the roadshow is part of a long-running effort, first launched in 2012, to make emergency preparedness information accessible and actionable for communities at risk.
Event Locations and Dates
The workshops will take place along Highway 101 from Manzanita to Gold Beach between March 31 and April 9.
Key stops include:
- Tillamook
- Newport
- Lincoln City
- Coos Bay (including a special business-focused session)
- Reedsport
Why It Matters
With coastal regions vulnerable to seismic activity, officials stress that awareness and preparation can significantly reduce risk and save lives during emergencies.
