A residential fire in Bend early Saturday morning caused extensive damage to a home, though the occupant managed to escape unharmed thanks to a working smoke alarm.
Fire Breaks Out in Attic
According to Bend Fire & Rescue, crews responded to a structure fire on Thomas Drive at around 5 a.m. The homeowner was alerted by a smoke alarm and evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Emergency responders reached the scene within minutes and were able to bring the blaze under control quickly.
Cause Linked to Pellet Stove Pipe
Officials said the fire originated in the attic, where heat from a pellet stove pipe ignited nearby insulation. The flames spread rapidly, leading to significant structural damage, including a partial collapse of the roof and ceiling.
Damage Estimated at Nearly $500,000
Authorities estimate the fire caused approximately $400,000 in damage to the structure and an additional $80,000 in losses to personal belongings, including a vehicle.
Importance of Smoke Alarms Highlighted
Fire officials emphasized that functioning smoke alarms play a critical role in saving lives. Many fatal house fires occur in homes where alarms are missing or not working properly.
